Continuation of Coverage During Layoff, Strike or Lockout

A Member who is on strike, lock-out or laid off by the Employer may, within 15 days immediately following his date of layoff, strike or lock-out telephone or send written notice to the Plan Administrator to elect to self-pay the cost for the following benefits, for a maximum period of 12 consecutive months subsequent to the month of layoff, strike or lockout:

  • BC Medical
  • Life Insurance
  • AD&D
  • Dependent Life Insurance
  • Dental
  • Extended Health (including EAP and ETA)

If a Member does not so elect, his benefit coverage shall terminate on the last day of the month in which he was laid off, went on strike or locked out.

Disability Benefits Suspended During Strike or Lockout

Should a Member become Disabled during a strike or lockout, he shall not be entitled to receive either the Weekly Indemnity benefit or the Long Term Disability benefit, while the strike or lockout continues. On the expiration of a waiting period of 17 weeks starting on the date the Member would have returned to active employment with the Employer following the end of the strike or lockout, had he not been Disabled, the Member shall be entitled to apply for the Long Term Disability benefit provided he is then Disabled.

Continuation of Coverage for Members Hired Prior to April 1, 2003.

Members employed prior to April 1, 2003, will be eligible to a three (3) month coverage reserve. This reserve shall be used to pay for coverage during the first three (3) months of a self-pay period. Once the three (3) month coverage reserve has been used, regardless of the duration of use, it shall be forfeited and cannot be replenished under any circumstances.

 

Continuation of Coverage During a Leave of Absence

Leave of Absence

A Member who intends to go on unpaid leave of absence, may maintain coverage for a period not exceeding six (6) months for himself and his Dependents for Medical Services Plan of B.C., Life Insurance, Dependents' Life Insurance, Accidental Death and Dismemberment, and Extended Health Care benefits, provided he arranges with the Plan Administrator, prior to his departure on such leave of absence, to prepay the required Contributions for such benefits.

Absence Due to Maternity or Parental Leave

If a Member ceases to be Actively At Work due to maternity or parental leave of absence, all Part D Plan benefits will continue for the period of leave to which the Member is entitled by the legislation that governs the Employer. Provided that the Employer is required to pay Contributions during such leave of absence no charge will be made to the Member. If a Member's coverage is not to be continued during such leave of absence, the Employer must notify the Plan Administrator of the last day the Member is Actively at work.

In a jurisdiction where the continuance of coverage is mandated by legislation, a copy of the Member's written and signed notice to discontinue any required premium Contribution must also accompany the Employer's notice of benefits termination.

While on Weekly Indemnity Benefit

All benefits will continue while you are on a Weekly Indemnity claim. Premiums will be paid by your Employer.

While on Long Term Disability Benefit

While you are on Long Term disability, the Plan will only pay premiums for B.C. Medical for the first 3 months you are on benefit. Premiums for Long Term Disability, Life Insurance, AD&D, and Dependent Life Insurance will be waived during total disability.

You will be invoiced monthly for any other benefits you may wish to continue.
